I collect true crime nonfiction for the same reason I binge true crime podcasts: I am easily lured down the rabbit hole when it comes to murder. If the case happens to be connected to a serial killer, even better. That means there is a pattern, a motive and possibly insight into their behavior. While my list of true crime is far greater than nine, I recommend the following books for a podcast-like read – each one is full of bizarre, horrifying cases and killer insights.
- Whoever Fights Monsters by Robert H. Ressler & Tom Shachtman
- The Cases That Haunt Us by John Douglas & Mark Olshaker
- Serial Killers: The Method and Madness of Monsters by Peter Vronsky
- I’ll Be Gone in the Dark by Michelle McNamara
- Green River, Running Red by Ann Rule
- The Serial Killer Files by Harold Schechter
- The Evil That Men Do by Stephen G. Michaud with Roy Hazelwood
- The Encyclopedia of Serial Killers by Michael Newton
- Crimes of Passion by Tim Healey
